“My career has been fulfilling, exciting, rewarding and challenging and I am so proud that I’m a police officer. I have enjoyed a varied career that would be the envy of most people. But now I have that dark cloud over me, I do not feel capable any more, I have lost my confidence and the coping mechanism that has allowed me to do the job I do without breaking down. I am terrified about what the next duty period will bring, I am struggling to deal with the nightmares and flashbacks.

I have not found it easy to ask for help; I have constantly tried to get promoted and I fear that any sign of weakness would be seen as a good way to eliminate me from what is a tough and hard-fought process. I get irritated, angry, defensive at the drop of a hat and I have lost some of my emotional feelings for friends & family. I feel I have failed, and I loathe what I have become.

I feel that I am now a burden on my family.”

David, senior serving Metropolitan police officer.

Post Traumatic Stress

“Trauma is associated with a situation in which the individual feels helpless, hopeless, or horrified by an event that potentially affects life or limb of either self or others”

“…trauma, similar to stress, is an individually perceived experience. It can be problematic when people outside the situation tend to rate the potential trauma of a situation based on their own perceptual lens.”
